TEFL Gap Year

Today’s gappers are a bit more clued up than when the gap trend had just taken off. Many of us went out into the big world with the only aim of ‘finding ourselves’ in our gap year and realised upon return there was still no sign of us anywhere. Even worse, we realised that there was no sign of jobs either and that the only gap we created was the gap in experience between us and those who went and found a job straight after finishing university.

What today’s gappers have realised is that they need to close the gap. Fill it up with qualifications, with useful experiences as much as you possibly can so that you have something to show for it upon return. Broadening horizons and exploring foreign cultures these days are concepts frequently used to describe ‘bumming about abroad’ and no longer regarded by employers as meaningful way to fill up that time gap on your C.V. Employers will want to know more about how you filled that gap and how your experience could contribute to a job role within their company.

So what about adding a bit of ‘experience teaching in a foreign work environment’ or ‘ability to cope with high levels of stress’ or ‘excellent time management skills’ or even ‘managerial experience’. TEFL will add all those things. Going to a foreign country to teach you will do so much more than sight seeing. It’s the perfect way to complement your travel experience getting a true feel what it’s like to live in a country: you will be dealing with students from different nationalities and all walks of life on a daily basis. Every day on the job will be different and you can savior the cultural highlights of your chosen destination with the money you earn on the way.

TEFL is an opportunity to fully immerse in the country’s culture and earning a decent wage in the meantime. You won’t earn a lot of money but you will be so much richer just from the experience. Instead of Smirnoff you’ll get drunk on achievement when you’ve helped a Russian overcome his pronunciation problems. You will discover that Turkish Delight can be so much sweeter when your Turkish students are using the present perfect correctly. You’ll be investing in your future, adding to your experience and crossing boundaries in many different ways which will make your experience a truly rewarding one!

The question now is where to start. There is a wide range of TEFL courses, preparing you for the experience and it is highly recommended that you do your research before you embark on a programme. At Cactus TEFL a team of qualified travelers and teachers are there to help you to choose the right course, whether you want to TEFL temporarily or TEFL forever.
